چکیده

Abstract A new scheme of optical pulse generation using multiple optoelectronic phase locked loops is proposed. The principle of the scheme is combining three or more coherent optical waves having equal frequency separation. The coherencies of the optical waves are attained by the use of optoelectronic phase locked loops. The repetition frequency of the generated optical pulse is equal to the frequency of the reference microwave/ millimeter wave signal source used in the phase locked loop. The intensity profile of the generated optical pulse and the pulse width are calculated. If four coherent optical carriers are combined, the generated optical pulse has a typical width of 2.4 picoseconds. In the proposed scheme the central frequency of the optical pulse and the repetition frequency can be varied. Since in this scheme, the superimposed optical waves are phase locked the associated phase noise of the optical pulse will be low.

Balanced optical-microwave phase detectors for optoelectronic phase-locked loops.

A balanced optical-microwave phase detector for the extraction of low-jitter, high-power, and drift-free microwave signals from optical pulse trains is presented. The phase detection is based on electro-optic sampling with a differentially biased Sagnac loop. Because the timing information is transferred in the optical domain, the regenerated microwave signal is robust against drifts and photod...

Single-cycle radio-frequency pulse generation by an optoelectronic oscillator.

We demonstrate experimentally passive mode-locking of an optoelectronic oscillator which generates a single-cycle radio-frequency pulse train. The measured pulse to pulse jitter was less than 5 ppm of the round-trip duration. The pulse waveform was repeated each round-trip. This result indicates that the relative phase between the pulse envelope and the carrier wave is autonomously locked. The ...

Closed-Form Analytical Equations to Transient Analysis of Bang-Bang Phase-Locked Loops

Due to the nonlinear nature of the Bang-Bang phase-locked loops (BBPLLs), its transient analysis is very difficult. In this paper, new equations are proposed for expression of transient behavior of the second order BBPLLs to phase step input. This approach gives new insights into the transient behavior of BBPLLs. Approximating transient response to reasonable specific waveform the loop tran...

Dual Phase Detector Based Delay Locked Loop for High Speed Applications

In this paper a new architecture for delay locked loops will be presented.  One of problems in phase-frequency detectors (PFD) is static phase offset or reset path delay. The proposed structure decreases the jitter resulted from PFD by switching two PFDs. In this new architecture, a conventional PFD is used before locking of DLL to decrease the amount of phase difference between input and outpu...

Ultralow-repetition-rate pulses with ultralow jitter generated by passive mode-locking of an optoelectronic oscillator

We demonstrate the generation of an ultralow-repetition-rate pulse train with a repetition rate of 19.6 kHz by passive mode-locking of an optoelectronic oscillator. The pulse-to-pulse timing jitter equals 0.06 ppm of the repetition time of the pulses. No significant dependence of pulse duration, pulse waveform, and timing jitter was observed when the cavity length was changed from 150 to 10,400...
